One-wall kitchen layout

Everything on a single wall: fridge, sink, dishwasher and range in one row. It takes the least floor of any layout, which is why studios, basements and open-plan rooms use it, but it needs a longer wall than most people expect.

THE ANSWER

With full-size appliances (a 36 in fridge, a 33 in sink base, a 24 in dishwasher and a 30 in range), a one-wall kitchen needs about 15 ft of wall to give every appliance the counter NKBA recommends beside it. With 24 in apartment appliances and an 18 in dishwasher, 13 ft is enough. On an 8 to 12 ft wall it still works as a kitchen, but something is short: usually the counter beside the sink or the range.

Why a one-wall kitchen needs a long wall

NKBA’s landing areas are counter beside each appliance: 24 in on one side of the sink and 18 in on the other, 15 in and 12 in beside the range, and 15 in beside the fridge. In an L or a U, some of that counter wraps around a corner. On one wall it all has to sit in the same row, and where two appliances share a stretch of counter NKBA asks for the longer of the two landing areas plus 12 in. The full-size appliances alone take 123 in, plus a 3 in filler beside the fridge so its door opens past the wall; the counter between them adds the rest.

The work triangle becomes a straight line. Our planner checks the two legs between neighbours, sink to fridge and sink to range, against NKBA’s 4 to 9 ft; the leg from the fridge to the range is just the two added up.

What fits on each wall length

Each plan below is the planner’s best arrangement for that wall, with the fridge at one end. Red marks what is short of NKBA’s landing areas; the plan text says where.

8 ft: four appliances and 2 ft of counter

Even 24 in appliances take 93 in with the fridge filler, which leaves 3 in of the 96 in wall. That’s a kitchenette: no counter beside the fridge or range. Leaving out the dishwasher gains 18 in; a cart or a table across the room gives you somewhere to set things down.

10 ft: 4 ft of counter, still short

The extra 24 in of wall becomes 12 in of counter between the dishwasher and the range and 12 in past the range. The sink is still 3 in from the fridge, so neither gets its landing area on that side.

12 ft: one check short

The fridge and sink share 36 in of counter, and the sink and range share 30 in: both pass. The range is left with 3 in on its other side, where NKBA wants 12 in. Moving the range away from the end wall would take the counter from the sink.

Here the range sits next to the fridge: 27 in of counter between them, 36 in between the range and the sink (the dishwasher under part of it), and 18 in past the sink. The legs between neighbours are 4 ft 3 in and 5 ft.

The sink and range share 18 in of counter where NKBA wants 30 in (18 in plus 12 in for two appliances). Everything else passes.

15 ft with full-size appliances: passes

36 in of counter between the fridge and the sink, with the dishwasher under 24 in of it, 30 in between the sink and the range, and 12 in past the range. The legs between neighbours are 5 ft 11 in and 5 ft 2 in.

The order of the appliances

  • Fridge at one end, its hinge against the wall and a 3 in filler so the door opens past it (makers ask for 2 to 3¾ in beside a wall).
  • Sink in the middle, with the dishwasher beside it, because both the fridge and the range need counter you can reach from the sink.
  • Range at the other end, but not hard against the end wall: NKBA wants 12 in of counter on that side too.
  • Nothing tall in the middle: a pantry cabinet goes at the end, beside the fridge.

In front of the counter, keep at least a 36 in walkway, NKBA’s walkway minimum; 42 in gives you a full work aisle, the figure our kitchen dimensions page uses. A standard fridge stands about 9¾ in past the counter, so measure from its door.

Adding an island

An island turns a one-wall kitchen into a two-sided one: the island gives landing space across the aisle (NKBA counts counter within 48 in across from the fridge) and a place for stools. Across the room you need the wall counter (25½ in), a 42 in work aisle, the island (40½ in deep with stools) and 36 to 44 in behind the stools: 12 ft to 12 ft 8 in in all, unless the stool side opens into another room.

16 ft wall with an island

The island sits 42 in from the wall counter, with 48 in walkways past both ends. Its counter more than doubles the kitchen’s total, to 15 ft 9 in. More island plans are in kitchen layouts with an island.

One-wall kitchens in studios and basements

A one-wall kitchen is often the only kitchen a studio or basement apartment has room for. Nest In Small’s studio apartment layouts show where it goes in rooms from 200 to 600 sq ft. If the wall is shorter than 13 ft, 24 in appliances and an 18 in dishwasher, or no dishwasher, buy back the most counter. See small kitchen layouts for other ways to fit a small room.

Questions people ask

How long should a one-wall kitchen be?

About 15 ft for full-size appliances to have all of NKBA’s landing areas, or 13 ft with 24 in apartment appliances. Shorter walls work, with less counter beside the sink or range.

What fits on a 10 ft one-wall kitchen?

A 24 in fridge, sink base and range plus an 18 in dishwasher, with about 4 ft of counter between them. That is short of NKBA’s landing areas; a 12 ft wall comes within one check.

Can a one-wall kitchen have an island?

Yes, if the room is about 12 ft deep or opens into another room on the stool side. The island needs a 42 in aisle from the wall counter.

Where should the fridge go in a one-wall kitchen?

At one end, with a 3 in filler next to the wall so its door can open fully, and counter on its other side.
