U-shaped kitchen layout

Counters on three walls: the most counter you can fit in a small room, as long as the room is wide enough for the aisle between the two legs. Measured plans from 8 × 10 ft up.

THE ANSWER

The two legs of a U face each other, so the room has to hold two 25½ in counters plus the aisle between them: 7 ft 9 in wall to wall for one cook and 8 ft 3 in for two, from NKBA’s 42 in and 48 in aisles. A standard fridge takes about 9¾ in of that aisle where it stands, so with full-size appliances plan on 10 ft; with 24 in apartment appliances an 8 × 10 ft U passes every check.

What a U-shaped kitchen is

Three runs of counter: one along the back wall and a leg down each side, with the open end as the way in. You get two corners and the longest counter of any layout for the floor it takes, and the work triangle stays small because the sink, range and fridge can each have a wall. The catch is width: the two legs face each other, so the aisle between them follows NKBA’s work-aisle numbers.

Wall to wall = two 25½ in counters plus the aisle; our arithmetic. Measure the aisle from the front of whatever stands out most: a standard-depth fridge reaches 35¼ in from its wall (Samsung’s 34¼ in to the door plus 1 in behind), a counter-depth one 29¾ in.

The ADA number binds buildings the ADA covers, not private homes, but it is the best guide for a kitchen that has to work from a wheelchair: a U-shaped kitchen needs 60 in between the legs, room to turn around, where a pass-through galley needs 40 in because you can roll straight through.

8 × 10 ft, full-size appliances: 1¼ in short

The counters leave a 45 in aisle, enough for one cook. But even a counter-depth fridge stands 4¼ in past the counter, so where it faces the other leg the aisle drops to 40¾ in, under NKBA’s 42 in. Every landing area passes.

  • Fix: put the fridge where it faces the open end, or use 24 in appliances (below).

8 × 10 ft with 24 in appliances: passes

With the door near one corner, the right leg stops short of it and the fridge ends up facing the open floor instead of a counter. The aisle between the counters is 45 in and the triangle is 15 ft, every leg between 4 ft and 5 ft 6 in.

  • Works: 10 ft 6 in of counter, more than an L of the same size.
  • Watch: a 24 in fridge holds much less: Whirlpool’s is 11.6 cu ft, GE’s 36 in French-door model 26.7 cu ft. See small kitchen layouts for more space savers.

10 × 10 ft with full-size appliances: passes

Each appliance gets its own wall: the sink on the left leg, the range across the back, the fridge at the end of the right leg. The aisle is 59¼ in even at the fridge, and the triangle is 17 ft 5 in, legs of 5 ft 5 in, 6 ft 2 in and 5 ft 10 in.

  • Works: 13 ft 3 in of counter, the most of any 10 × 10 ft plan we drew.
  • Watch: with the window centered on the back wall instead, the dishwasher ends up too close to a corner: the planner keeps 21 in between it and the next leg, as NKBA asks. The 10x10 layouts compare it with an L and a galley.

Two corners

A U has two inside corners, and each one hides a cabinet that is hard to reach, so most U kitchens use a lazy susan or pull-out corner fittings. Keep the dishwasher 21 in from both corners and the fridge out of them: in a corner a standard fridge stands in front of the other counter and its door can’t open past the wall. The corners still count as landing space: NKBA measures the counter along its front edge, so the counter beside the sink can run into the corner and continue on the next leg.

G-shaped kitchens: a U with a peninsula

Add a peninsula to the end of one leg and the U becomes a G: more counter, and stools on the outside. The peninsula needs its own work aisle in front of it, so the room grows to about 13 × 13 ft. G-shaped kitchens get their own page.

13 × 13 ft G: passes

The peninsula sits 43½ in from the back counter, and the stools on its far side have 48 in behind them, enough to walk past (NKBA asks for 44 in). The triangle is 17 ft 8 in.

A U with an island

An island inside a U needs a work aisle on three sides, so the room has to be at least 15 ft 3 in wide: two 25½ in counters, two 42 in aisles and a 48 in island. The island layouts page has the room math for every layout.

16 × 12 ft U with an island: passes

The island keeps 42 in to the back counter and 43½ in to the legs, with 36 in behind the stools to edge past. The counter adds up to 27 ft 3 in, twice NKBA’s target.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum width for a U-shaped kitchen?

7 ft 9 in wall to wall for one cook, from two 25½ in counters and NKBA’s 42 in aisle, and 8 ft 3 in for two cooks. A fridge that faces the other leg needs a few inches more.

Can a U-shaped kitchen have an island?

Only in a wide room: at least 15 ft 3 in across, because the island needs a 42 in aisle to each leg as well as to the back counter.

How much room does a wheelchair user need in a U-shaped kitchen?

The 2010 ADA Standards ask for 60 in between the legs (section 804.2.2), so 9 ft 3 in wall to wall with 25½ in counters.

Is a U-shaped kitchen good for two cooks?

Yes, if the aisle is 48 in or more: each cook can have a leg. Below that, one cook works and the other passes behind.
